So this is Canada, eh? (The blackout, the wedding and more)
We just got back from a sojurn in Canada. My wife's cousin has a cottage on a lake about 20 minutes south of Owen Sound, Ontario. We love to go up there because it's very laid-back and truly relaxing. And as it turns out, there were plenty of things to blog about... My wife's cousin has two very talented and athletic daughters, and one of them was selected by Verve magazine to be the Lady Speedstick MVP; a pretty neat honor for a talented and pretty girl. The second day we were up there, long about 4:00pm, the TV went off. And as it turns out, so did the power. All the power. Everywhere. With a propane stove, a gas grill, a handy spring and plenty of candles, we were in pretty good shape for the great US-Canadian Blackout of 2003. The next morning we went out for ice, food and gas, but by the time we got back to the cottage, the power was back. Saturday we went to a family wedding in Owen Sound. Outdoors, in a park. The wedding was an interesting mix of casual and formal: the bride wore a beautiful white satin gown, and the groom wore a black tux, but both wore flip-flops. The groom was one of seven children of another of my wife's cousins, who had gone out to B.C. to go to college, only to meet a girl from back home out there (I did that too--went across the country to school only to meet and marry a girl living two hours from where I grew up). The groom's sister-in-law was the emcee for the reception and claims she will never do it again although I swear she could do it professionally. Here's a few photos from the happy event.
